TRADES, TRADES AND MORE TRADES
The last few days of spring training always provide plenty of roster movement, of course it rarely is blockbuster type stuff. Jim Callis of Baseball America has analysis of all the trades here.
Here are the deals...
RHP Blane Neal to SD
RHP Ben Howard to FLA
...Two right-handers with good stuff. Howard had a pretty good 2003 campaign (3.63 ERA, 34.2 IP, 31 H, 15 BB, 24 K). He gave up 10 HR and had a poor K/BB ratio. Neal had an ERA of 8.14 in 21 innings pitched last season. 38 H, 9 BB, 10 K, 2 HRA. Again, a poor K/BB ratio and a ton of hits (almost two an inning).
UTL Jolbert Cabrera to SEA
RHP Aaron Looper and RHP Ryan Ketchner to LA
...Cabrera can literally play anywhere on the diamond. He saw time at all fielding positions but catcher last season, but has caught in the past. The Dodgers get a pair of arms for Jolby. This is one of the few deals the Dodgers made. Paul DePodesta is finally starting to get to work in Los Angeles.
OF/2B Jason Romano to TB
SS Antonio Perez to LA
...Romano isn't anything special with the bat, which is fine if you're a second baseman, but a different story when you're an outfielder. He's still young at 25, so maybe he'll develop. The Dodgers don't seem to think so, which is probably why they shipped him out. Antonio Perez has been playing second base for the past two seasons. Perez is only 24 and needs to stay healthy. If he does he might be a solid middle-infielder.
OF Roger Cedeno to STL
C Chris Widger, IF Wilson Delgado to NYM
...In 2001 while in Detroit, Roger Cedeno looked like a soon-to-be solid leadoff hitter in the Major Leagues. He hit .293 with a .337 OBP and stole 55 bases. While 26 years-old, he looked as if he was coming into his prime. Then he went to New York. Apparently he left his game in Mo-town. Cedeno will now be remembered as the poster-boy of the Steve Phillips era.
