COMMENTS ON BALT/BOS LAST NIGHT WITH STORY ABOUT DEJEAN
Pedro Martinez looked very shaky early on, but settled down and had a decent outing. His velocity was at about 87-89 last night. If he's going to throw in that area he's going to have to be able to throw more than just his fastball/changeup to get hitters out.
Boston looked sloppy. Pedro Martinez threw away a comebacker after looking to second and then not getting his feet set to throw to first. It's only one of 162 as they say, so I wouldn't be too worried if I was Boston.
Former Milwaukee Brewer Mike DeJean made his Oriole debut last night and reminded Milwaukee fans of his abysmal 2003 campaign. DeJean recorded one out, gave up a hit, walked two and threw nine of twenty-five pitches for strikes.
In 2003 when DeJean had blown about four of five save opportunities I remember him and a fan going at it in the Milwaukee bullpen. The fan said something like "oh no DeJean is going in, that means the best we can hope for is extra-innings" (at the time the Brewers were winning). Earlier the fan had used profanity and that is what originally upset DeJean since there were children present. I can respect that. But realistically, he's warming up and about to go in to close a game, let security worry about something like that. Anyway, after the fan and DJ were going at it for a while eventually Mike resorted to the old "meet me in the parking lot if you're so tough" line. The fan laughed and responded with "you're a professional baseball player and you're about to go into a big league game and all you're worried about is fighting some drunk in the stands?". I think it was clear who won this exchange. I have no evidence of this, only observations, but it seems like:
1) fans heckle players less than they used to
2) players can't take it like they used to
Buying a ticket doesn't give a fan a right to be an obnoxious jackass. However, heckling is part of the game and the best way to stop a heckler is to just ignore him, not to try arguing with him and then challenge him to a fight in the parking lot after the game.
