APRIL FOOLS DAY PRANK GOES AWRY
Some hack DJs in Indiana thought it would be a good idea to pretend that Don Mattingly had died.
"Our idea was to mention several times that our thoughts and prayers were with the friends and family of Don Mattingly. Later in the morning, we planned on stating that he had nicked himself shaving and we were concerned for him," Booker said in a news release posted on the Evansville station's Web site.
Yeah, I don't know why this idea would go bad. Word got back to Mattingly's kids in school and others, who became worried because they knew that Donny Baseball was on his way back from Japan.
April Fools Day always seemed kind of stupid to me. It's not like anybody ever comes up with a good prank. It's always annoying little things that everybody could do without. Whenever the punch-line to a joke is "April Fools!", It's probably not funny. The one thing I do know is that pretending somebody is dead or has been severely injured is not funny. Especially when you have a radio show like Brad Booker and Diane Douglas of WTSO in Evansville, Indiana. Judging by the content of their material, these two probably had dozens if not hundreds of listeners. You can't be responsible for causing a panic.
I have a feeling that there will be plenty more stories that fit under the heading "April Fools Day prank goes awry".
